This Venus de Millo Gallery, the site of the queen's private apartments from the 16th century, was completely redesigned by Napoleon I's architect Fontaine to serve as a gallery of antiquities. The statue adheres, intentionally or not, strictly to the Phi, Golden Ratio or Golden Proportion of 1.6180339887. The famous statue without arms is thought to portray Venus in Rome, or Aphrodite, as she is known in Greece. The left arm was held at just below the eye level of the statue above a herm while holding an apple. Produced in the Hellenistic art period, the Venus de Milo sculpture is believed to have been created by Alexandros of Antioch between the years 150 BC and 125 BC. ![]() To this day, though, the Louvre accurately asses the date at around 100 B.C., but makes no mention of Alexandros or the Hellenistic era.Īlthough the statue is widely renowned for the mystery of its missing arms, enough evidence remains to prove that the right arm was lowered across the torso with the right hand resting on the raised left knee so the sliding drapery wrapped around the hips and legs could be held in place. Later scholars, absent agenda, have since determined that the base did in fact belong to the original sculpture. Quick to dismiss the base as a later restoration based on a the presence of a herm, the Count de Forbin, director of the Louvre, chose not to display it proclaimed Venus a Classical Greek masterpiece from the school of the great Praxiteles. The marble figure believed to depict Aphrodite, the Roman Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, is slightly larger than life, measuring 203cm (6.7 ft) high.
